What it does
- brightening
moderate evidenceOne randomized double blind split body trial found 1% hexylresorcinol equivalent to 2% hydroquinone for facial and hand pigment over twelve weeks, but neither side carried a vehicle or untreated control, so improvement against baseline is not attributable to hexylresorcinol alone. The supporting in vitro work is thin: the cited kinetic study characterises it as a tyrosinase substrate rather than measuring inhibition, and the one head to head comparison in the cited set found it less effective than 4-butylresorcinol.
On a label: usually effective at 1%.

Where it fits in your routine
Give it four to eight weeks — that is when the change first became measurable.
What was measured, and in whom
Measured on: visible reduction in pigmentation.
In a prospective randomized double blind split body study, 32 women aged 35 to 65 applied 1% hexylresorcinol to one side of the face and the matching hand and 2% hydroquinone to the other, twice daily for twelve weeks, and 29 completed. Colorimetry and clinical grading fell significantly against baseline at both week 4 and week 12, with no difference between the two sides. There was no vehicle arm, so the fall against baseline is not attributable to the ingredient alone.
