The molecule
The five pieces are meant to be apart. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a salt, and its parts are held to each other by opposite charges rather than by a bond.
The Glow take
Genuinely worth a spot in your routine.
When your goal is fading dark spots and evening out tone, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate pulls genuine weight, with a solid amount of evidence behind it. It only performs at the right pH, so it is worth buying from brands that get the formulation details right.

What is known, and what is missing
Measured on: melanin index / clinical lightening in melasma; no verifiable monotherapy time course.
The cited in-vivo evidence is a 1996 report on 10% VC-PMG cream describing significant lightening in 19 of 34 melasma and senile-freckle patients, but I could not verify its treatment duration or visit schedule, and 10% sits above the 3-10% clue most consumer products use. The other clinical support applies 5% MAP alongside nicotinamide and hyaluronic acid, so any timing there belongs to the combination, not the ingredient. Missing: a monotherapy trial reporting an onset visit.
Kameyama et al., 'Inhibitory effect of magnesium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate (VC-PMG) on melanogenesis in vitro and in vivo', J Am Acad Dermatol 1996 — duration unverified, PMID not asserted; combination melasma trials confounded.
