Genuinely worth a spot in your routine.

What is known, and what is missing

Measured on: Wrinkle score in photoaged facial skin, image analysis.

The one trial that isolates topical resveratrol found nothing to time. Rao et al. 2025 ran a four-arm factorial in 122 completers over 40: oral 75 mg, topical 1.5% cream, both, or double placebo, twice daily for 8 weeks. Wrinkle scores fell significantly only in the combined oral-plus-topical arm against double placebo at week 8; the topical-only arm did not separate from placebo on wrinkles or on any other skin parameter, and the only thing it moved was an increase in U-zone sebum. The sponsor manufactures the ingredient. The other frequently cited results are blends - resveratrol with baicalin and vitamin E over 12 weeks, and multi-product post-laser regimens - which cannot be attributed. Read this row as 'no measured onset', with the added caveat that the single controlled test of the topical alone was negative at 8 weeks.

Rao et al., Front Aging 2025, 'Trans-resveratrol reduces visible signs of skin ageing in healthy adult females over 40: an 8-week randomized placebo-controlled trial', PMID:41488277 (four-arm factorial; topical-only arm null). Rejected blends: Farris et al., 12-week resveratrol/baicalin/vitamin E study (no PMID asserted); Shi et al., J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2024, post-laser CE Ferulic plus resveratrol BE regimen, PMID:38828801.

Resveratrol, answered

Is Resveratrol safe during pregnancy?

Clear it with your doctor first. Resveratrol is flagged as use-with-caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so check with your doctor or midwife before adding it.

Who should avoid Resveratrol?

Approach Resveratrol with care if any of these apply to you: very sensitive. Its irritation risk is moderate, so introduce it slowly and patch test first.

What concentration of Resveratrol actually works?

Its concentration is rarely printed on the label, so use the ingredient list as your clue: near the top third it is likely doing real work, near the bottom it is more of a sprinkle.

During pregnancy

Treat Resveratrol as a maybe rather than a yes for now. It is flagged as one to use with caution while pregnant or breastfeeding, so it is worth clearing before you carry on.
