Purging, or just a breakout?
Three questions. The answer will be less confident than the ones you have read elsewhere, because when we went looking for the evidence that purging happens at all, we could not find it. Here is what is actually known, and what it means for what you should do next.
The evidence, per ingredient
We built a page for each of these asking one question: has anyone measured the flare people call purging? The answers are on the pages, and they are shorter than you would expect.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between skin purging and a breakout?
The theory says purging is your existing clogs surfacing faster, so it should land where you usually break out and start soon after a turnover-accelerating active. Spots in new places, or on an ingredient with no turnover mechanism, do not fit that story. That is the whole logic of this check, and it is a story about plausibility, not a measurement.
What does skin purging look like compared with a breakout?
Nobody has published a photo series that separates the two, so we are not going to pretend a visual guide exists. The usable signals are timing and placement, which is what the three questions above ask about.
How long does skin purging last?
Nobody has measured it. The four to six week figure you have read everywhere traces back to a cell-turnover estimate that was corrected in 1972, not to anyone watching faces.
Is it purging or an allergic reaction?
Three questions cannot separate acne from irritation or an allergy, and this check does not try. Itching, burning, or a spreading rash points away from purging and towards stopping the product and asking a doctor or dermatologist.
What this does not do: it does not see your skin, and three questions cannot separate acne from irritation from an allergy. Painful, spreading, or leaving marks behind is a question for a doctor or a dermatologist rather than for any chart, this one included.
The long version of why the four to six week rule has nothing behind it is in what skin purging actually is. If you want to know what else is in the product that set this off, paste its ingredient list into the free label decoder, and if you are wondering whether two things in your routine are fighting, try the conflict checker.
